We went white water rafting on the Kaweah river. The river is located right outside Sequoia National Park and about an hour northeast of Bakersfield. We drove up there Friday afternoon and hit LA rush hour traffic head on! It's no wonder we don't do things closer to home more often, because we try to avoid LA as much as possible. We wanted to get to our hotel in Visalia (TA Review) at a decent time and be able to get a good night's sleep before our trip, so we didn't have much of a choice. We got so annoyed with the traffic that we just stopped and had dinner to let some of the traffic pass by. It helped a little.
We got up early and drove from Visalia into Three Rivers and meet up with the group at Three Rivers Hideaway at about 9am. We all packed in the bus and drove to our put in spot.
The rafting trip was so much fun. It was a Class 4+ trip, I was a little nervous at first. We'd been before with the same company, White Water Voyages, on a different river (Kern River) in the area. Our guide was from Switzerland and was just visiting a friend, but they needed an extra guide and he was put to work. He had never been down the river before, which he told us in the beginning, but we thought he was making a joke. Turns out, he's a great guide and a lot of the other guides asked him for advice when approaching rapids. We were also one of the few rafts that did not flip over on the trip. At one point though, our raft was completely submerged in the water after going down a rapid. We somehow all fell into the middle and the raft popped right back up and out of the water. There was also only 4 of us plus our guide in the raft, so that may have helped. All the other rafts had 8 or more people.
